The What About Us? Book Reading Initiative
This Summer we are trying to get our children back to the basics by starting a reading initiative that we can all participate in. The idea is to have our children:

  • Improve their reading and comprehension proficiencies
  • Develop a cultural understanding of who they are by reading works written by and about Africans and African-American authors that can detail our stories from our perspective
  • Inspire them to develop a love for reading.

As we know, our children are highly intelligent but many of them lack the skills, confidence, and most of all the incentive to become avid readers amongst us so we have built-in that incentive with monetary stipends for children who show that they have completed their choice reading and have presented a short report detailing what they have learned as a result.
The stipends are awarded as follows:

Stipend                                                                           Requirements

$5 General Book Reading (non-African/African-American Reading)

$10 Books containing African/African-American authors and or Biographies

Monies generated through donations and sales of What About Us Merchandise (Sorry, we are sold out of shirts at the present moment) will go towards this initiative as well as the community involved programs such as the Saturday School and the Community Clean Squad activities. If you have any books or supplies such as pens, pencils and composition books we would gladly receive those as well, every little bit helps.

None of the proceeds will be used outside of the primary focus of the initiatives to help rebuild and restore our communities through building and uplifting our children.

Thank you for all of your support in this endeavor!
